It’s been a few days before I published something so I take the opportunity to do so.
My website, donmhi.co, was setup a week ago and I already had published some posts and my first free plugin, DM Instagram. Since then, the site is getting new registrations. But the problem is while i’m checking the new users, I noticed that they are probably just “bots” and “spams”.
By default, wordpress, doesn’t include any email confirmation on registrations. Visitors can register to a wordpress site and the password is sent to their email. The problem is, upon registration, wordpress already “created” the account. New columns are already added to the database which is actually a waste of web space if the new registrant is not “real”. So to solve this common spam issue, I created DM Confirm Email.
DM Confirm Email is a plugin that requires email confirmation before an account is actually created. The plugin integrates seamlessly to how wordpress registration works. So the registration is actually the same as how it should be except that, upon registration. An email is sent to the new user which contains a “confirmation link” and the user should go to that link before his / her account is created by wordpress. With this, waste of web space is prevented.
Of course, everything on the plugin can be customized through it’s plugin’s settings page. The email confirmation message can be changed, and the admin can set the “grace period” before the confirmation link expires.
The plugin is simple, yet powerful against simple spams. I recommend to other wordpress admins to install the plugin to protect their websites from fake users.
P.S. – I am looking to make the plugin compatible with the old versions of wordpress. Also if you have any ideas or suggestions, let me know so I can try to add it on the next versions of DM Confirm Email.
